Air Handling Units Specialisation

Introduction

The important issues of our times, energy efficiency, indoor air quality and the transition to climate-friendly refrigerants, depend not only on efficient technologies but first and foremost on the complete understanding of HVACR technologies and products available. The Air Handling Unit (AHU) Specialisation provides a comprehensive overview of the AHUs and their components including essential information on specifications, certification, regulations, and standards. The course is divided into 10 modules of about one hour each and will run over the course of several weeks, with two modules per week.

Module 1 – Fundamentals of AHUs 1

In an introduction to AHUs, this module will outline the basics of AHUs, the importance of energy efficiency and the role of design and specifications in achieving it.

1A – Fundamentals of AHUs
  • Basic terminology and elements of AHUs
  • Available certifications and their benefits
  • Factors influencing Total Cost of Ownership
  • Benefits of investing in high-performance AHUs
  • Long-term operational savings and reduced environmental impact
1B – Configuration of components in AHUs
  • Applications and their specific requirements
  • Configuration of components according to application

Module 2 – Fundamentals of AHUs 2

In this module, we look at hygienic AHUs, their definition, characteristics, applications, and certification. We discuss general quality criteria for AHUs regarding design, manufacturing, durability, and performance.

2A – Hygienic AHUs
  • Standards and guidelines
  • Eurovent, VDI 6022 and DIN 1946-4
  • Requirements in terms of design, components, transport, storage and assembly
  • Monitoring, inspections, and maintenance
2B – Quality criteria in AHUs
  • Eurovent Industry Recommendation 6/18: Quality criteria for Air Handling Units
  • Identifying quality aspects to include in specifications

Module 3 – Fans, Drives and Motors

This module showcases different types of fans, discusses the differences between direct and indirect driven fans, and looks into different motor and drive technologies.

  • Theoretical background
  • Belt driven, direct driven, fan wall technology
  • Benefits of certification for AHU
  • Safety and connectivity features of drives as part of AHU
  • Energy Efficiency

Module 4 – Air Filtration

This module is designed for planners and consultants. It will enable participants to identify the most important IAQ parameters and include them in their planning and building design work. Among others, air quality monitoring, filtration plans, and sustainable business models will get a closer look. In practical sessions, various industry solutions will be introduced and evaluated.

  • IAQ
  • Air Filters for General Ventilation
  • ISO 16890 Standard
  • Filter classification and product Filter Certification

Module 5 – Energy Recovery

  • Plate and rotary heat exchangers
  • Enthalpy wheels
  • Materials
  • Certification
  • Impact on energy efficiency

Module 6 – Humidification

  • Types and selection criteria
  • Minimum requirements in accordance with the application, Misconceptions
  • Standards and references

Module 7 – Cooling Coil Performance

This module focuses on cooling coil performance in AHUs across different temperature differentials (ΔT).

Participants will gain insights into how cooling coils operate under varying ΔT conditions, exploring the impact on cooling efficiency and overall system performance.

The module will cover key performance parameters, such as heat transfer efficiency, airflow dynamics, and energy consumption.

Module 8 – Controls in AHUs

Applications:

  • Importance of Control Systems for AHUs
  • Benefits
  • Protocols
  • Interconnectivity
  • Energy performance aspects

Module 9 – Certification

Performance certification is an important tool for consultants to verify that performance standards are met.

This module will thoroughly explore how to properly apply certification requirements, validate a manufacturer’s claims, and understand energy labels specific to hot and humid climates, including their role in enhancing energy efficiency.

Module 10 – Specification

(Panel Discussion)

In this module, we will discuss several cases of incorrectly written or copy-pasted, outdated specifications. Participants will have the chance to interact with the speakers and evaluate mistakes.

It will also provide the opportunity to exchange with speakers and receive advice, opinions, and feedback on specific specification items.
